Every day is the same, each dawn and dusk plagued with never-ending nightmares. The skies grow dark with despair and hope fades away with each passing sunset. The merry songs, our hearts once sung, have been traded for dirges.
We were set on this path by the very ones we called our Fathers and deserted by the ones we chose as heroes. They abandoned us and squandered the spoils of our land. Our streets were once laced with gold and our rivers, adorned with diamonds. Now, children whose future we trade for bread litter the streets; and the rivers polluted by the blood of the natives they killed for gold.
Our land slowly wastes away as other nations advance on their quest to rule, to dominate, to conquer the world. However, the further they advance, the farther away we are from our freedom from the bondage that makes us slaves to poverty.
We toil day and night, and night and day, enslaved by the those we appointed to redeem us yet we barely afford our daily bread, instead, they feed us with lies and fabricate stories of futures we’ll never have.
They take us for fools, manipulating the laws to satisfy their never-ending greed. They have mistaken our silence for weakness and have taken advantage of our patience. Maybe we have been fools, we have been silent too long.
We spend our whole lives waiting for change, yet no one is willing to lift a finger to lighten the burden. All we do is dig deeper, the graves that “these heroes” made for us. The future, we do not concern ourselves with, all we desire is to gratify our hunger.
We have become the reflections of the very ones we hate. Mirroring their lust for the insatiable, trading our very essence for the inessential, clawing our way to doom.
Time and time again, like a never-ending loop, we make the same mistakes. Blindfolded by greed, we crown thieves as kings and honor murderers over the reputable. My heart shatters to a million pieces. What will become of us?
I hope we awaken from our slumber, find our voices and take our rightful place as the heirs we were conceived to be.
